A City (a poem by Robert VanderMolen)

A city buried under mud–
Earthquake followed by water
Surging up a narrowing passage

An ancient chronicle remarked
How one could peer at domes and spires
Under a bright and spacious lagoon

The question is, she asked herself,
Whether the sea had risen or the landscape had sunk

Ordinarily, she was too embarassed
To say what she meant. Taking a shower
With leaves nearly covering the window,
A congress of birds on the hillside…

As fast as you wane your child grows,
Grandmother said,
Salting her beer
